‘One day you will look back on your wedding and what will you remember?’ It is a phrase often heard when talking about wedding planning and photography.
Wedding photography undoubtedly is one of the biggest factors in capturing the mood and memories of your special day. With this in mind, we put some photographers in front of the lens to be interviewed for their insightful observations.
What got you started in wedding photography?
Our photography journey started in KwaZulu-Natal. We are Troy and Tarryn, husband and wife team, who are photographers and videographers based in KZN. Our marriage is 12 years strong and we have a daughter (Layla), a sausage dog (Belle), and a rat (Borat).
We love adventure, the outdoors, travel, animals, gaming, coffee and good wine. Someone once said, do what you love and you will never work a day in your life, and that’s exactly it!
We love being photographers, and documenting wedding days makes us happy. Marriage is such a fun ride, and we love helping our couples remember all the special details about their big day.
We love shooting together.
We are able to capture different aspects of each wedding, and this makes what we do unique because we both shoot together. This has proven ideal for weddings as Tarryn is able to focus primarily on the bride and Troy on the groom.
It started off as a hobby together and then exploded into what it is now 🙂
How long have you been doing photography in this industry?
We have been shooting since 2014.
How would you define your shooting style?
We shoot documentary style.
What is your favourite time of day to shoot and what is your favourite season (if there is one)?
Sunrise shoots are life! Otherwise, the last hour of daylight is best 🙂 Winter shoots are our fav!!! Golden light and brown tones – yes, please!!!
Will you be the person shooting photographs if a client hires you, or do you have subcontractors?
We both do the shoot – we don’t outsource.
Do you have different wedding packages?
No, we have one standard package.
Do you have a Plan B if you happen to be ill?
We have some epic contacts who we trust; so if one of us is hospitalized then we will hit that list. But one of us will always be there.
We have both done shoots when we have been mega sick, so the only time it ever would be both of us, or at least one of us, would be for hospitalization only.
Do you supply additional lighting as well as use natural lighting?
We have but fake lighting is the worst!
Will clients’ photos be retouched?
Yes, they will. We have worked hard on developing presets of all lighting conditions and then Troy brushes and perfects each picture.
Is a contract of services provided?
Yes, there is.
What has been your all-time favourite moment to photograph at a wedding?
We shot a blind girl’s wedding this year, and it was so special.
She hired us because she heard that we were fun and made the creative shoot a fun process, and because she knew she wouldn’t be able to ever see her wedding photos, she wanted to remember and feel the emotions and happiness that was experienced on the shoot 🙂
African Bear do wedding and lifestyle photoshoots throughout the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. You can find them on African Bear Photography. Thank you Troy and Tarryn for the use of the beautiful images in this article.
