Doing a little DIY for your wedding adds a touch of personality and one-of-a-kind flair. But we all know the hilarious #NailedIt fails – DIY projects gone wrong! It looked so good on Pinterest, but turned into a horror scene in reality. There’s even a TV show on Netflix dedicated to people who’ve turned DIY into a disaster.
It’s one thing to mess up a cake for your Uncle’s birthday party; it’s another thing altogether to ruin your wedding decor attempts! If you’ve been bitten by the DIY bug and want to add a personalised touch to your big day – while avoiding any #NailedIt social posts – we’ve put together a list of 5 DIY decor trends suitable for any skill level:
#1 Dip-Dye DIY

Let’s start with the easiest of the lot. Dip-dye is just that – dipping an item in dye (either fully submerging it, or only dipping part of it) to give it a new shade.
You can dip-dye just about anything – vases, fabric napkins, accessories, table runners, place cards, candles – the only limit is your imagination. Just make sure that you are using the right dye for the right material.
The beauty of dip-dying is that there’s no need for uniformity; each piece is supposed to look unique and different.
#2 Forge your own forest

Making your own ‘trees’ is a great way to bring the outdoors in. Keep an eye out for tree branches that you can paint and put into pots – like mini trees. You can then hang anything you like from the branches – fairy lights, candles, menu cards, table seatings, etc.
#3 Wooden Palettes

Wooden palettes are the wedding DIY-ers dream as they can be used for so many things. Even if you aren’t comfortable cutting wood, you can use the palette as it is. Painted or otherwise, a palette is both useful and decorative. Here are some ideas:
- Use a palette as a casual table – guests can sit on cushions around it during your post-ceremony drinks while you’re having photos taken.
- Use the palette as a temporary wall or backdrop – you can nail art, signage or bunting to it.
- Paint your dinner menu or wedding schedule on a palette and lean it up somewhere guests will see it.
- Pin your dinner menu, seating arrangement or wedding schedule onto a painted or decorated palette
- If you’ve got some woodworking skills, you can even make an entire bar out of palettes, or create benches with cushions in your wedding colours.
#4 Terrific terrariums

If you’re more of a plant person than a floral gal, using a terrarium makes for a striking centrepiece. Fill a glass container, globe, geometric box or bell jar with a selection of succulents and foliage. You can even get creative by adding other accessories that go with your theme.
Your terrariums can also double up as wedding favours as you can invite guests to take them home.
#5 Marvellous mirrors

Mirror, mirror on the wall… always the most fabulous of all! Mirrors add a timeless elegance to a wedding design. Visit your local charity or thrift shop to find second-hand mirrors. You can:
- Paint the frames in your wedding colours
- Write on the mirror as signage or a seating chart
- Use vinyl sticker decals to get your desired look.
