5 Reasons to Honeymoon in the Midlands

You probably know that the Midlands is one of South Africa’s favourite wedding destinations, but have you ever thought of its potential as the ideal honeymoon haven?

Sshhh, don’t tell everyone, but the Midlands is home to some of the best honeymooning in the country.

Here are our top 5 reasons to honeymoon in the Midlands:

1. The majestic mountains

The Drakensberg mountains are easily accessible from the KZN Midlands. Even if you’re not a keen hiking couple, we highly recommend a visit to this magical mountain range, which is one of South Africa’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders.

The Drakensberg range is over 200 km long, creating a natural border between Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal. The average height of the range is 2 900 metres, with the highest peak up to 3 482 metres above sea level. Enjoy the views from the top, or stay in the foothills to marvel at the amazing peaks above.

2. Gourmet foodie finds

The Midlands is known for its local delicacies and delights. Surrounded by farmland, the area has access to some of the best produce in the country. A variety of restaurants cater to all tastebuds, and visiting the local markets is a must.

When eating out and about in the Midlands, looking for local food and treats is key – from coffee to cakes and cheeses, your taste buds will be set a-tingling.

3. Sensational spas

After a busy wedding period, you probably need to take some time out for maximum relaxation, and the Midlands is just the place!

There are a number of award-winning spas in the area, many of which are set in the most beautiful surrounds. Whether you choose to enjoy just one treatment or to stay for a few days, the Midlands has your spa spoils covered.

4. An award-winning array of accommodation

From rustic backpackers to country barns and five-star luxury, the Midlands can accommodate any kind of honeymooners. One thing that most Midlands’ accommodation has in common is its intimacy – there are very few large hotels and resorts, and a lot of places are owner-managed.

Midlands’ hospitality will make you feel special and spoilt as you spend this fun and romantic time together as a married couple.

5. Spectacular scenery

Of course, wherever you go on your honeymoon, you’ll be treated to the wonderful view of your new husband or wife. The Midlands allows you to experience this and so much more!

The views and vistas are part of what has made the Midlands such a popular wedding destination, and the same applies to honeymoons.

With plenty of open space, dams, rivers, waterfalls, indigenous forests, grasslands, fields and farmlands, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to those obligatory honeymoon selfies.

Besides driving along the scenic routes of the Midlands, there are also exciting activities to take advantage of to enjoy the scenery in different ways – how about a Canopy Tour over the forests of Karkloof, or some mountain biking to put your new spouse to the test?!

Top tips for a Midlands’ honeymoon:

  • Pick up a copy of the Midlands Meander guide – this booklet features many of the attractions of the Midlands area mapped out on different routes.
  • Don’t plan too much in advance – with so much to do in the Midlands, it can be fun to ‘wing it’ when it comes to the day’s activities.
  • Make sure that you have a car to drive. Public transport isn’t easy to come by in the area, so make sure you bring or rent a car to enjoy the country roads.
  • When you book or arrive, let your hosts know that you’re on honeymoon so that they know to make your experience an extra-special one.

After your wedding at Harrington House, you need not travel far for an amazing honeymoon. From relaxing retreats to adrenalin-pumping adventures, the Midlands has it all!
